subtle revolution

"There are two kinds of revolutionists, as of most things- a good kind and a bad. The bad revolutionists destroy conventions by appealing to fads- fashions that are newer than conventions. The good do it by appealing to facts that are older than conventions." (G.K. Chesterton)

do all things well

What I've learned so far...

think honorably
speak sparingly
listen constantly
laugh frequently
act humbly
weep earnestly
rest peacefully
deal justly
work diligently
serve faithfully
learn repeatedly
live generously
pray constantly
forgive liberally
love... arduously, savagely, sacraficially

Please share your life lessons.

the lost art

There was once a day when men had virtue. There was once a time when simply being a man meant being a gentleman.
A man would hold open a door. He would stand as a lady entered or exited a room. He would rise and introduce himself to a newcomer. A gentleman would offer his jacket to a lady in the rain or the cold. A gentleman was humble, loyal, courteous, and just.

There was once a day when such things were true of a man.
Now it seems that the tides have changed and "men" are but a shadow of what they once were. We call ourselves advanced, but for all the advancement in women's rights, they are degraded in ways not so different than their ancestors. You can see the belittling devaluation of women on nearly every television show reaching airtime... You can hear it in the songs reaching the ears of the populous... You can sense it as you simply open your eyes to perceive daily interaction around you.

It sickens me.

The saddest aspect to this sordid reality is that the abasement of women in today's society is due in part to the attitudes of women themselves.
Woman after woman continue to step forward to shamelessly promote indignity on a variety of exploitative reality television shows. They willfully objectify themselves by shaking it for a few hundred dollars in a video. And to top it off- they will shroud all of their actions in the name of the women's rights and liberation movement. I may be a simple man, but doesn't this really defeat the genuine heart of the movement that sought equality and respect for the "fair" gender?

I guess I'm kind of spouting off right now, but I'm not going to apologize for my viewpoint. I consider myself to be chivalrous in a modern sense. I seek to treat all people with dignity and respect. My hope is to rise above the delusion of popular culture in order to restore love, courtesy, and honor.

All this being said, I find it truly disheartening to find that my actions of courtliness are likely most oft perceived as disingenuous by today's woman. Women get weak in the knees over the congenial actions of Mr. Darcy (or any other character ever portrayed by Colin Firth on-film)... Women will even complain about the attitudes of men today, but get put-off when a guy extends the slightest bit of cordiality. What a sad state we are in when men are so loathesome that women are more willing to pursue the affections of a contemptuous slouch than to trust the civil actions of a genuine gentleman.

Anyway, I guess I'll hop down off my soapbox for a while and wait for the onslaught of objections to my "antiquated" view of the world... or worse yet, the onslaught of silence by an apathetic populous. Okay... NOW I'll get off the soapbox.

sweet nibblets

Is it so wrong that I enjoy the Disney channel?
If it's not polite to talk about religion and politics, why are those a couple of my favorite topics?
What does it mean to work like a dog? My dog sleeps over half of the day... and spends the rest of the time doing things that would be inappropriate to discuss in this format.
Speaking of my dog, how is it possible for a 12-pound pup to take up over half of a queen-size bed?
Can a person love music too much?
How many books is too many to be reading at one time?
Why can't I get "Tomalo" out of my head?
Why do people think it's so weird that I bought a brown mp3 player instead of a white or black one?
How soon is too soon to go see "Wicked" again?
How did I become a coffee snob so quickly?

land of the free

Little Elba how’s the sun in South America? Does it shine upon the faces of the poor? Do they see in it the brilliance of the place that’s been prepared and dwell upon the hope of what’s in store?
Or are they just like me? Do they only seean opportunity to complain about the heat?

Little Elba, how’s the rain in South America? Does it fall upon the rooftops of the sick? Do they thank the Lord for coming up with such a great idea and dream about a place beyond all this?
Or are they just like us? Do they gripe and fuss about the rain and mud
when they’ve had too much?

‘Cause I’m just a little jealous... of the nothing that you have. Unfettered by the wealth of a world that we pretend is gonna last. They say God blessed us with plenty- I say you’re blessed with poverty. ‘Cause you never stop to wonder whether Earth is just a little better than the Land of the Free

Well, I’m weary of the spoils of my ambition and I’m shackled by the comfort of my couch. I wish I had the courage to deny these of myself and start to store my treasure in the clouds.
‘Cause this is not my home, I do not belong, where the antelope and the buffalo roam.

And I’m just a little jealous of the freedom that you have. Unfettered by the wealth of a world that we pretend is gonna last. They say God blessed us with plenty- I say you’re blessed with poverty. ‘Cause you never stop to wonder whether Earth is just a little better than the Land of the Free.

So I hope you’re safe and dry in South America. ‘Cause I’m feeling pretty good in Tennessee. May you never be so happy you forget about your home...Your home in the Land of the Free.

This song ran constantly through my head while I was in Ecuador. I thought I would share the lyrics with everybody.
